The present tense

Present simple

When something is a fact (always true)

for example:

  • I think you are right. (think, believe, know)
  • My father is 63 years old.

When something is a habit

for example:

  • John smokes 10 cigarettes a day (phrases like: every week, twice a month, sometimes, etc.)
  • I sometimes go to the cinema. My sister play tennis twice a week.

Spelling:

  • Consonant + y = ie ; e.g. carry → carries
  • Vowel + y = y ; e.g. play → plays
  • -es with words that end with an s-sound, e.g. kiss → kisses

Consonants are: b, c, f, g, h, m, n, etc. Vowels are: a, e, i, o, u, y

y is a vowel in happy and gym y is a consonant in yellow and yogurt

Present continuous

When something happens right now:

  • He is working very hard right now and cannot be disturbed
