Linking Words¶

Making your text ‘flow’¶

When writing and editing, you will need to check that the text flows from section to section, that there are no jumps in the logic, and that the document ‘hangs’ together. You also need to make sure that the language flows from word to word, sentence to sentence, and paragraph to paragraph.

The devices that make the transitions clear are called linking words.

Example sentences:¶

• Despite having all the qualifications, I was not offered the job.

• Although Mandarin Chinese is spoken by most people, English is the most widespread language.

• English is usually the language of international business. Furthermore, it is the language of IT.

• The tennis player had knee surgery mid-October; consequently, she took the rest of the season off.
