Introduction¶
To fulfill your English requirements for Game Development you will submit your research paper in English. In general, when writing research papers it is essential to consider composition and style to ensure clarity, coherence, and effective communication of your ideas.
We will be on the lookout for the following aspects, without any particular order:
Structure: Make sure you write with a clear and logical structure throughout your paper. Organize your content with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Use headings and subheadings to guide readers through different sections of your paper. You can find some basic structure tips here.
Cohesion and Coherence: This is closely related to structure and means that you should make logical connections between your ideas to ensure coherence. The text within the same paragraph should clearly belong together and have a sense of being “whole”. When transitioning from one piece of text to another, guide the reader with the use of special phrases or linking words. You can find tips to help you achieve text flow here.
Grammar: You should pay attention to grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Proofread your paper carefully to eliminate errors. Consider using grammar-checking tools or seeking assistance from your fellow students. If you use AI to help you, ask it to point out mistakes, do not ask it to rewrite the text for you. At this point of the program, we mostly want you to get the basics right, which means that we want you to use the basic verb tenses of English correctly. Please use the following pages to help you with present tense, past tense, and perfect tense.
Style: Please write semi-formally. Avoid using jargon, slang, buzzwords, or colloquialisms.
Additional things to keep in mind. The following areas are not our focus in year 1 but will become increasingly important as you get further along in the program. They are useful tips for a wide variety of texts, not just research papers:
- Write clearly and use straightforward language. Your research should be easily understood by readers, including those who are not familiar with your area of expertise.
- Present your arguments and analysis objectively. Try to make your research, and not you as a researcher, central to your writing. This is also useful to keep in mind when writing recommendations or advice.
