Benjamin Personal Profiling

In this document I will describe what my ideal dreamjob would be, what my options are when I graduate and any alternative options I have.

Dreamjob

An important contributor to why I ended up choosing Game Development for my education is because I am a huge videogame nerd myself. Of the games I frequently play, there is this one first-person space magic shooter called Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 is a game published by the Sony-owned game studio Bungie. Destiny is the ideal blend of mechanics that I think would be great to work on. Not only does it have shooting and different movement options, but the subclass system of Destiny allows a sort of magical aspect to be added for an interesting flair. The role I would like to fill within Bungie would be junior gameplay engineer. This would allow me to work on the gameplay itself. However I recognize that I probably wouldn’t be assigned in such a role straight away, so it would be more like I would start as a tools engineer, to work at tools and programs that would be used in game development or in Bungie‘s online presence.

Of course I’d also love to work on a game I am already very fond of, as well as the fact that Destiny 2 is a huge game. It’s an amazing goal in my eyes.

My options

Game Development might be my specialisation here at school, but when I graduate I will get a HBO-ICT diploma for my efforts. That means that my options after school are broader then just getting into the game development scene. Some options include:

  • Game Developer
  • Software Engineer
  • Webdeveloper
  • IT consultant

Of these, Game Developer and Webdeveloper would be best, since I specialize in game development for school and I currently build websites as my job.

Alternative options

However I have some alternative options, aside from getting hired by a company in the IT scene.

Studying more is always an option after finishing this education. Spending a year or two specializing in something else can make me pretty desireable for any role in the IT world.
I recognize that this option could be ideal, but I likely wont be studying more after this education. I would like to get actual working experience and grow by developing myself while I work.

The other alternative would be sticking with my own business. When I finished my last education, Application/webdevelopment, I started my own business in order to use the things I learned and get payed more then a shop clerk would be.
While I am studying at the HvA, I will continue to keep working for my business as it gives me control over when I work for good wages.

Conclusion

Out of all of these options, becoming a Game Developer, Webdeveloper or studying more are most likely. They are directions I will be proficent in, allowing me to get a good start on my professional carreer.

My own business was never meant to last forever, so I don’t feel shackled down by it. However since I am only at the end of my first year at the time of writing this, it is very possible my options change later on.
